Cheese snacks with beer, wine and coffee: pairings that work

In short. Crispy cheese works as a snack wherever you’d usually put out nuts or crisps — but without frying and without sugar. Rich, salty flavours go better with beer, aged ones with wine, mild ones with coffee. Specific pairings below.

Pairing table

Drink What to choose Why
Pale beer, lager Smoked Sulguni, Cheddar Smokiness and salt bring out the hops
Dark beer, stout Primaggio, Emmental An aged cheese holds its own against a rich flavour
Dry red Primaggio, Gouda A classic pairing: aged hard cheese
Dry white Mozzarella, Gouda A mild cheese doesn’t overpower a light wine
Sparkling Blue Royale Salty and sharp contrasting with acidity
Coffee Mozzarella, Cosmic A neutral flavour doesn’t clash with coffee
Tea Nut mixes Nuts and cheese come through well alongside tea
Pack of snEco Smoked Sulguni dried cheese 28 g — a snack for beer
Smoked Sulguni is the most popular choice for pale beer

With beer

The most obvious scenario — and the most popular. Crispy cheese does the same job as salted nuts: it brings saltiness and texture, yet it has about 50 g of protein per 100 g and almost no carbs.

With pale beer, go for Smoked Sulguni: smokiness and hops amplify each other. With dark beer — Primaggio, it is aged and doesn’t get lost.

A practical advantage over nuts: the pack leaves no greasy marks on your hands, so you can share it at the table without thinking about napkins.

With wine

The usual cheese-board rule applies here, just in a different format. Aged cheese with red, fresh with white, blue with sparkling.

If you’re putting together a wine board, crispy cheese looks surprisingly at home on it: it adds a third texture next to soft cheese and cured meat. Pour a few flavours into small bowls, add nuts and grapes — and you have a ready snack in two minutes, with no slicing and no knife.

With coffee and tea

A less obvious but workable pairing. The key here is not to overpower the drink, so go for mild flavours: Mozzarella or Cosmic.

It’s a convenient option for the office: coffee from the machine and a pack of cheese instead of biscuits. The difference is that an hour after biscuits you’re hungry again, but after 13 g of protein you’re not.

What not to do

  • Don’t pair it with sweet cocktails. In this case salt and sugar clash rather than complement each other.
  • Don’t serve all nine flavours at once. Three or four per board is ideal; otherwise the flavours blend and stop standing out.
  • Don’t pour it out in advance. Pour it out just before serving: in an open bowl in a humid kitchen, the snack gradually loses its crunch.

Why cheese is paired with drinks at all

The rule that works for regular cheese works here too: salt and fat soften the tannins in wine and the bitterness in beer, while the rich flavour of cheese needs a drink that can stand up to it.

The only difference is texture. Regular cheese on a board is soft and greasy to the touch; crispy cheese is dry and brittle. Because of this, it “coats” the tongue less, and the taste of the drink comes through more cleanly afterwards. In practice, this means crispy cheese gets in the way of tasting less — which makes it handy wherever the drink is the star.

How much to serve and in what

Don’t tip the whole pack into one large bowl if there are more than two guests: the snack at the bottom quickly absorbs moisture from the air and stops being crunchy. Several small bowls, one flavour each, work better.

As a guide: a 28 g pack per person if it’s the only snack, and 14 g if there’s already something else on the table. For a group of six for the whole evening, this is usually enough: 500 g split across several flavours.

What to serve alongside

Crispy cheese pairs well with things that bring a different texture or acidity:

  • Grapes, pear, figs — juiciness in contrast with the dry snack.
  • Walnuts, almonds — the same crunch, but a different flavour.
  • Cured meat, prosciutto — a cheese-board classic.
  • Honey or jam — especially with Blue Royale: the sweetness tames the sharpness of the blue cheese.

What’s best kept away — sauces and anything moist. If the snack sits next to a sauce, it will inevitably absorb moisture from the air above it.

For venues

In a bar or café, crispy cheese solves several everyday problems at once: it needs no fridge on the bar counter, doesn’t spoil during a shift, is portioned with a spoon and leaves no greasy marks on furniture or menus.

For this there are 500 g bags — about 18 servings of 28 g — and branded boxes of 15 or 25 packs if the snack is sold by the piece.

Frequently asked questions

How much to put out for a group?
Count on roughly one 28 g pack per person if it’s the only snack, and 14 g if there’s something else on the table.

Is it suitable for a bar or café?
Yes, for venues there are 500 g bags and boxes. That’s about 18 servings per bag and a noticeably lower price per gram.

Can it be served to kids instead of crisps?
Yes, that’s what kids’ “Cosmic” is for. The difference from crisps is significant: there’s no frying here, and there is protein.
