Short answer: an ordinary Ukrainian supermarket has a dozen products that suit keto without any extra explanation: hard cheeses, dried cheese, nuts, olives, eggs, jerky, 85% dark chocolate, avocado. The key is to read the ingredients, not the word “keto” on the package: most “keto bars” contain maltitol, isolate and flavourings, and “keto snacks” made from almond flour have 5–8 g of carbs per serving.
What you can grab without a second thought
| Product | Carbs per 100 g | Pros | What to watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dried cheese | 1–2 g | crunchy, 31–60 g of protein, no fridge needed, just cheese | 7–14 g in mixes with nuts |
| Hard cheeses | 0–2 g | available everywhere | need a fridge and a knife |
| Nuts: macadamia, pecan, walnut | 4–10 g | fat, fibre | cashews and pistachios: 20–30 g of carbs |
| Olives | 3–6 g | fat, salt, convenient | brine, jar; crispy dried ones — no brine |
| Boiled eggs | 1 g | cheap | fridge, smell |
| Jerky, cured meat | 2–10 g | Protein | sugar and syrup in the marinade: read the ingredients |
| Dark chocolate 85%+ | 15–20 g (little per serving) | for “something sweet” | a serving is 2 squares |
| Avocado | 2 g net | fat, potassium | not for your bag |
What usually does not fit, even though it looks “healthy”
- Muesli bars, granola — oats, honey, syrup: 50–60 g of carbs per 100 g.
- Fruit leathers and “natural sweets” — dried fruit = pure sugar.
- Rice and corn cakes — 70–80 g of carbs.
- “Keto bars” — look out for polyols (maltitol raises blood sugar), isolates, flavourings; net carbs are often 3–6 g, but the ingredient list runs ten lines long.
- “Sugar-free” yoghurts — 4–6 g of lactose per 100 g, plus often starch.
- “Cheese-flavoured” cheese chips — corn and oil, 55–60 g of carbs.
Why dried cheese is the most convenient shop-bought keto snack
It is the only item on the list that is at once crunchy (it satisfies the urge to “crunch” that makes people cave in and reach for crisps), dry (it keeps in a bag or cupboard for 18 months), high in protein (12–17 g per pack) and made from a single ingredient. A 28 g pack has 0.3–0.6 g of carbs. If you stick to the classic 70/25/5 ratio, the most fat comes from Blue Royale (51 g) and Cheddar (47 g); the most protein comes from SUPERFOOD (60 g).
