Short answer: a sugar-free snack that really fills you up is protein or fat, not a “fruit bar with no added sugar”. What works: dried cheese, nuts, eggs, olives, veggies with hummus, plain yoghurt, dark chocolate with 85% cocoa or more. What doesn’t work, even though it’s sold as “sugar-free”: fruit leather, dates, dried fruit, agave syrup bars — it’s the same sugar under a different name. Below are 10 options and a rule for reading the label.
The label rule
“No added sugar” doesn’t mean “sugar-free”. Dates have 65 g of sugar per 100 g, raisins 60 g, “natural fruit leather” 50 g. Agave, Jerusalem artichoke, date, coconut and “maple” syrups and honey are all sugar to your body. Maltitol and sorbitol (the “sugar-free” in sweets) raise blood glucose and upset digestion. Look at the “of which sugars” line: if it says 20–60 g per 100 g, it’s a dessert. Dried cheese has less than 1 g.

Why protein and fat
Sugar causes a glucose spike, and an hour later you’re hungry again. Protein and fat are digested slowly, keep glucose steady and keep you full for 2–3 hours. That’s why a pack of dried cheese with 13 g of protein eaten at 4 pm “carries you” to dinner without biscuits, unlike a fruit bar with the same calories. It’s also why people who are losing weight choose dried cheese: one pack is 135–195 kcal, less than 0.5 g of carbohydrates, and no sweet cravings. The lowest-calorie flavours are SUPERFOOD (134 kcal per pack) and Smoked Sulguni (153). Full table: dried cheese calories.
When you crave something sweet
- First, something salty and high in protein: a pack of cheese or nuts. A sweet craving is often just hunger.
- Then “sweet without sugar”: 2 squares of 85% chocolate, coffee with cinnamon, berries.
- The Gouda + hazelnut mix gives a nutty sweetness without sugar, the best “dessert” option in the range.
Sugar-free snacks for kids
The same rules apply: cheese, veggies, egg, nuts (if allowed), whole fruit rather than juice or fruit leather. A 14 g mini pack of mozzarella or gouda + an apple is a sugar-free school snack with no “sugar rush” in class. More in healthy school snacks for kids and snacks for kids.
